Algerian Independence and the End of Colonial War

Years of war and negotiations led to Algerian independence; decolonization reshaped North Africa while leaving challenges involving migration, violence, and memory.

An imagined early twenty-first-century city: a tram passes a plaza where people walk, cycle and gather by trees and streetside shops.
An AI-generated imagined historical panorama suggests everyday life. It is not evidence for reconstructing a specific event or archaeological site.

The story

After nearly eight years of war, negotiators for the French government and Algeria's National Liberation Front signed the Évian Accords on March 18, 1962, providing a framework for a ceasefire and self-determination. A referendum on July 1 supported independence, France recognized it on July 3, and Algeria commemorates independence on July 5. The accords, recognition, and independence commemoration therefore should not be presented as occurring on the same day. Independence did not immediately eliminate political conflict or the problems of migration left by the war. The map is located in the capital, Algiers; 1962 marks independence, rather than the year the war began.

Elsewhere in the world

Read alongside the wave of African independence in 1960 and the Bandung Conference of 1955 to compare different paths to independence through negotiation, resistance, and war.
