Brazilian Independence: Another Path in Portuguese America

Pedro declared separation from Portugal at Ipiranga; Brazil established an independent state as an empire, following a different path from Spanish South America.

An imagined nineteenth-century industrial street: a printing shop, pedestrians, carts and a distant steam railway form one continuous scene.

The story

On September 7, 1822, Pedro declared Brazil's independence at Ipiranga near São Paulo, and the date became a commemorative landmark in the independence process. Independence did not involve a transfer of power completed in every province on the same day; fighting in Bahia, for example, continued into 1823. Brazil subsequently established a monarchical empire, and independence did not immediately abolish slavery: a nationwide abolition law was passed only in 1888. Political independence, state institutions, and individual freedom are historical changes that need to be examined separately.

Elsewhere in the world

Several republics emerged in Spanish South America during the same period, while Brazil retained a monarchy; a single Latin American independence event cannot encompass every region.
