The Republic of India and Its Constitution Take Effect

After independence, India established the institutional framework of a republic through constitution-making, enshrining the organization of the state, fundamental rights, and adult citizens' voting rights in its constitution.

The story

India continued drafting its constitution after independence in 1947. The Constituent Assembly adopted it on November 26, 1949; some provisions came into force that day, while the main provisions took effect on January 26, 1950, when India became a republic. This was a distinct political milestone from independence and partition in 1947. The constitution established a parliamentary system, arrangements for powers between the center and the states, fundamental rights, and adult suffrage, and prohibited untouchability. The principle of legal equality did not mean that caste, gender, and wealth inequalities in society disappeared with it. The map marks the parliamentary area in New Delhi.

Elsewhere in the world

The progression from independence and partition in 1947 to the establishment of republican institutions in 1950 shows that decolonization involved both sovereignty and how a new state would organize its governance.
