The Founding of Joseon and the Formation of a Confucian State

Yi Seong-gye replaced Goryeo and founded the Joseon dynasty; dynastic change, the later relocation of the capital, and institution-building together reshaped politics on the Korean Peninsula.

The story

In 1392, Yi Seong-gye founded the Joseon dynasty, initially retaining Gaegyeong as the capital; the map marks this founding location. The capital moved to Hanyang, later Seoul, only in 1394: the founding and the capital's relocation are two separate landmarks. The new dynasty gradually organized bureaucracy, education, and ritual through Confucian learning, but social and religious life did not transform completely on the day of its founding. The scholarship and creation of a writing system under Sejong in the fifteenth century took place within this context of state-building. Joseon here is the name of a historical dynasty and cannot be directly equated with either present-day state on the Korean Peninsula.

Elsewhere in the world

Linking the establishment of the government in 1392 with the publication of Hunminjeongum in 1446 reveals connections between institution-building and the spread of knowledge.
