Qin Unification of the Six States and Imperial Institutions
Qin ended the coexistence of the six states and integrated institutions such as central administration and weights and measures, profoundly influencing later Chinese politics.

The story
After completing his conquest of the six states, King Ying Zheng of Qin took the title of emperor. He strengthened control through administration by commanderies and counties, laws, and a bureaucratic system, and advanced the standardization of writing, currency, and weights and measures. Roads, frontier defenses, and tomb-building projects demonstrated the ability to mobilize resources while also increasing burdens on inhabitants. The Qin dynasty soon fell, but succeeding dynasties adapted and inherited many of its institutions. Unification here means the integration of the states of the time, rather than the inclusion of all the territory of present-day China.
Elsewhere in the world
During Qin unification, Rome and Carthage were competing for supremacy in the Mediterranean; both ends of Eurasia were undergoing political integration.
