The Launch of the African Union and Continental Cooperation

The African Union was formally launched in Durban, continuing the work of the Organization of African Unity and placing regional cooperation, development, and peace and security within a new institutional framework.

The story

In 1963, independent African states established the Organization of African Unity in Addis Ababa to advance decolonization, national sovereignty, and continental cooperation. The Sirte Declaration of 1999 proposed the creation of the African Union, and the new organization was formally launched in Durban, South Africa, in July 2002. Its proposal, institutional preparations, and formal launch cannot be merged into a single date. The African Union seeks to strengthen political and economic cooperation among African countries and promote development, peace, and security. Shared goals do not mean that countries have identical institutions or development experiences, nor that the continent has become a single country. The map marks the launch site in Durban, rather than the African Union headquarters or the full area of its membership.

Elsewhere in the world

From independence movements to the building of international institutions, African countries have tried to address development and security issues together. This can be compared with European integration and ASEAN cooperation, although the organizations have different structures.
